Island Aid Resources
4.0 Facilities and Equipment
While the core of ISLAND-AID’s work is focused on using a ship and boats to carry out relief work, it has also established a comprehensive support infrastructure. Below is a list of ISLAND-AID’s existing, proposed and previously utilized facilities and equipment.

4.1 Existing Facilities and Equipment
4.1.1 Padang Headquarters
ISLAND-AID headquarters is located at Rick and Jane’s residence in Padang, West Sumatra. (See Appendix I) Operations command and control are located on the ship while it is on mission.

The property is private and secured by fences, a guard dog and security staff night and day. Facilities include the following:
• 120m2 Main residence with office and dining area.
• 70m2 Guest residence capable of sleeping up to 10 volunteers
• 60m2 Studio area (convertible to office space in an emergency)
• 60m2 Managers residence and store
• 10m2 Workshop guard house (can be used as a radio room)
• 70m2 Garage/store (currently used for storage of relief supplies and equipment)
• 15m2 Washing area and store
• 20m2 Workshop for construction
• 5kva diesel generator + mains supply
• 5m x 15m Freshwater swimming pool - reserve water supply
• 100m3 water tank below studio
• Independent water supply (Rain water catchment system with tanks from all roofs)
• 5 phone lines
• Internet access, computers, fax and office furniture.

Buildings are all new and have been constructed to withstand seismic shock. The site is at 275m elevation with road access that would not be affected by a tsunami. The elevation keeps the buildings cool and there is no need for air-conditioning, reducing the need for power.

The facilities and space are currently provided to ISLAND-AID free of charge. Food, staffing and running costs will be funded by ISLAND-AID donations for as long as the facility is required. As ISLAND-AID grows, some dedicated structures may be required. (See Appendix I)

4.1.2 Electric Lamb
Built by Rick over an eight year period and launched in 1981, this timber yacht is a veteran of over 200,000 sea miles in Indonesian waters. (See Appendix L) Electric Lamb commenced operations in the Mentawai Islands in May 1993.

Electric Lamb is currently available to ISLAND-AID at US$400 per day plus food and fuel. This is approximately 40% of commercial charter rates prevailing in the area and represents compensation for crew, general maintenance and depreciation. (See Appendix J)

4.1.3 Polyurethane (PE) Skiffs
The fleet of four fast beach landing boats are state of the art double skin molded PE utility craft with an individual capacity of up to 1.25 tons in calm conditions. Powered by 40 hp outboards and equipped with anchors and radios, unloading rates of up to 40 tons per day can be achieved if conditions allow. (See Appendix K)

Equipment details:
• 4 x 6.2m PE molded beach landing skiffs
• 5 x 40 hp outboard engines
• 4 x VHF marine band hand held radios

This equipment has been deeded to ISLAND-AID for eventual transfer to communities in affected areas on completion of ICS Sumatra.

4.1.4 Work vehicles and trailer
ISLAND-AID has available to it two Toyota Hard Top 4x4 long wheel base vans in Padang, one fully renovated fully (1979) and one mechanically sound (1981). Each can seat up to 8 persons and is capable of off-road use, however they are very old, use a lot of fuel and are not suited to use in remote areas. 1 x box type trailer - one ton capacity.

The vehicles, trailer and drivers (the cars may not be driven by volunteers) are available for ISLAND-AID work at the cost of fuel, salary and minor repairs.

4.1.5 Information Technology
ISLAND-AID secured partial sponsorship from Australian Satellite Technologies for the hire purchase and discounted operational costs of a high capacity voice/data link from the mother-ship. The 64kbps link is expensive but essential for ongoing operations.
