Gerard Dijkstra & Partners was originally founded as Ocean Sailing Development Holland BV in 1969 by Gerard Dijkstra. For the first ten years the office was mainly involved with (short handed) ocean racing. However, the specialization soon included yacht design and the building supervision of ocean going sailing boats and fast short handed racers, using the experience of Gerard Dijkstra as skilled sailor.
Much attention has always been given to research and development. Experience in all aspects of yacht and boat building has been built up. From design, lofting, building, rigging, sail making to the actual sailing and maintaining. New designs are tested in towing tanks and wind tunnels, strength of hull and rig is studied with finite element analyzes. The bureau holds an unique combination of theoretical and practical capabilities and has good knowledge of boats, seamanship and yards worldwide.
Gerard is considered one of Europe’s leading yacht and rig designers and he has played a leading role in the rebuilding of the only remaining J-Class yachts, Shamrock V, Endevour and Velsheda.

  | Gary Young http://starbulletin.com/96/04/03/business/story1.html Natural Fiber Composite Consultant - Gary is the holder of patents covering resin infusion technology for natural fibers such as bamboo for the manufacture or fabrication of watercraft and boats. Gary pioneered this field and he will visit the AMTC to train local staff in bamboo selection, preparation, vacuum infusion and laminating techniques.

Gary Young believes in bamboo.
It could be used for car bodies, boats, and all types of construction, he says. Young, who operates his business in Kapoho, on the coast south of Hilo, already has made a reputation using bamboo for surfboards and sailboards. Champion windsurfer Robbie Naish has one of his boards.
Bamboo is also gaining national attention for many other products, and next month Hilo will be the center of the world's bamboo brainstorming at the Big Island Bamboo Conference and Trade Show. Young is one of the pioneers in bamboo experimentation, including the use of shredded palm fronds to create laminates which are light and strong. "They use less resin and are less energy-intensive to manufacture than synthetic fibers or steel," Young said. "They look the same when painted and (have) no rust or rot."

 |  Natural Fiber Composites are now being adopted by Auto manufacturers for internal components. Combined with sucrose derived epoxy resins, bamboo fiber can be moulded into complex shapes and finished to high standards. The tooling to achieve these results is low cost and the techniques are easily adapted to low cost boat construction in areas where labor costs are well below those in developed nations.

  | Wolfgang Besigk - PT Polytech Indonesia Wolfgang has been advising ISLAND-AID since January. He manages a state-of-the-art PE roto-molding factory in Jakarta for PT Polytech Nusantara, suppliers and part donors of our beach landing skiffs. The company has provided over 100 of the 6.2m hulls to various donor organizations for use in Aceh and they are now seen in almost every port in the area. Wolfgang is a professional diver and for many years he operated a large dive ship in the Eastern part of Indonesia. Wolfgang has vast experience with marine engines and equipment and he has access to metal workers should we need complex fabrication.
After prototypes are thoroughly developed and demand is confirmed via micro credit programs, it should be feasible for PT Polytech to invest in the mold fabrication for a design that has a large market potential. PE rotomolded boats possibly represent the ultimate solution for small mass produced watercraft. The material is buoyant, recyclable and the production time can be reduced to hours for blank hulls.
The double skin hulls are truly unsinkable and they are much stronger and more impact resistant than GRP or wood epoxy. Their greatest disadvantage is that they tend to be more expensive than plywood boats and the current designs are best suited to larger engines. Transport of the finished boats remains a key factor in the final price and viability but shipping is an option and if volume is large, the costs will be manageable.

 | Introduction courtesy of ABET http://www.bri.net.au/ John Welsford grew up on his parents farm building canoes from roofing iron and scrap timber. Learning the basic principles of boat designing this manner was quite effective - he could swim pretty well and a mistake made in design or construction meant only a dunking in the water and the opportunity to recycle the materials into another small boat.
Today, he is the author of 'The New Zealand Backyard Boatbuilder', sold worldwide, is a well known designer of small boats for the home boatbuilder, and is an active builder and sailor of his own products. Telling others of his adventures, and writing for club newsletters lead to him writing professionally, and in addition to having two books in print, he also contributes to a number of boating magazines. So today - 19 years after creating his first designs - he is a successful designer of high tech racing yachts, sports rowing boats and long range ocean going launches - and of course the small boats is most well-known for - as well as appearing regularly in magazines worldwide.

  | Now living in Rotorua near the middle of New Zealand's North Island John is an hour away from salt water but has 21 lakes within easy range so still has many opportunities to use the small boats that are his first love. With his hobby starting to take over his life - and his 'day job' suffering as a result - and encouraged by his wife Jan, John decided to design boats full-time last winter.
He and his two helpers now send plans all over the world and advise and assist home boat builders. John works many long hours out in his workshop building boats (mostly in plywood - a material ideal for the amateur builder) trying out new products, and discovering the solutions that make his plans practical for the unskilled home builders who are the bulk of his clients.
With more time at the drawing board, and his two associates doing the administration and some of the drafting, 'John Welsford's Small Craft Design' is growing fast, and his successful international design enterprise would be quite a surprise to those teachers who saw him as such a headache when he was a 14 year old!

  | Currently regarded as the best marine engineer in Jakarta, Didi is a licensed ships captain and highly skilled marine operations manager. He has hands on knowledge of boat-building and long experience with most of the marine engines to be installed on the boats being considered. Didi has set several game fishing records and has access to machine shops capable of fabrication of most of the parts the mission might otherwise have trouble finding. Didi speaks fluent English and he has committed to taking on the role of Indonesian technical advisor.
