Proposed Non-Marine Products
  | Diversification and Complementary Products To develop new boat and propulsion designs is the first priority for the project but to ensure that the standard of living in fishing communities is improved is the ultimate goal. Education, health and communications are all vitally important and so a multi faceted approach is appropriate to make the best use of field missions.
Products and technologies that can be used on boats and in villages will be supported and promoted during boat assembly training programs in remote island villages. Special attention will be given to supporting small scale village industries, sustainable power and communications infrastructure and sanitation programs.
Where possible technology that has been successful in other areas in the region will be used and Island Aid will work with other NGOs with expertise and experience in each field.
Because the adoption of new boat designs will be linked closely with the availability of credit and because of past failures of fisheries credit programs in Indonesia, it is important to build capacity in non-marine products so that the work force and management of the production facility can continue to find markets for products made by workers trained in by the experts funded by this project. In this way the yard should be able to provide micro credit in-house on attractive terms.
